Nominations for Diamond Awards due Sept. 21

NEW — 2:10 p.m. Sept. 17, 2012

Nominations for the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce’s upcoming Diamond Awards ceremony are due by Sept. 21.

The event will be Nov. 14 at The Golf Club at Newcastle.

A recipient of a Diamond Award is chosen based on their contribution to the community of Newcastle.

The six award categories include business, citizenship, community leadership, customer service, education and employee. Read more

Diamond Awards honor community

Members of the Newcastle community who contribute time, energy and service to make the city a better place to live were recognized at the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce’s Diamond Awards on Nov. 10.

Karin Blakley, Diamond Award emcee and chamber board member, said recipients in the event’s youth, education, business, community service and mayor’s choice categories exemplify service and community pride that make Newcastle a great place to call home and do business.

Kent Coburn and Roland Deex were honored with a Diamond Award in the youth category.

Coburn has volunteered at Newcastle Days, and for Arbor Day and various Weed Warrior events since 2008. He plays in Hazen High School’s jazz band and played at Newcastle’s Earth Day event in 2011.

Deex, a Liberty High School student, is a member of the honor society and tutors students before school, and he mentors a Newcastle boy with autism each week through the Athletes for Kids buddy program. During Deex’s Eagle Scout project, he organized service projects to benefit the East May Creek Trail.

Cathy Dean, a first-grade teacher at Hazelwood Elementary School, was awarded the education award for her ability to build good relationships with students that enable them to achieve a strong educational foundation.

Valley Medical Center was honored in the business category. The medical center was recognized for stepping up during tough economic times to become the main sponsor of Newcastle Days.

This year’s Diamond Awards were presented to outstanding members of the community Nov. 10 at The Golf Club at Newcastle.

In the youth category, awards were presented to Jeff Hansen and John Stiller for their work with Newcastle Weed Warriors, and Neil Chakravarty for his Eagle Scout project, which involved replacing 62 trails sign plates across the city.

The community service award was presented to Parks Commission Vice Chair Koleen Morris, who took the leading role in organizing this year’s Newcastle Days celebration.

Youth helps give trail signs a makeover

December 2, 2010

Users of the city’s trail system will probably notice some changes to signs across the city.

Newcastle resident Neil Chakravarty — a freshman at Liberty High School and member of Newcastle-based Boy Scout Troop 499 — took inventory of city trail signposts and sign plates, replaced those that were damaged or missing, and installed new signs on the city’s newer trails, all as part of his Eagle Scout project.

The project began in June and did not conclude until October, and Chakravarty ultimately installed nearly 20 new wooded signposts and mounted nearly 80 new aluminum sign plates. The project also included chamfering the sign plates and insetting them into the signposts.

This year’s Diamond Awards were presented to outstanding members of the community this afternoon at The Golf Club at Newcastle.

The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2010 Diamond Awards through Oct. 25.

The awards are given out each year to recognize outstanding members of the community.

This year’s awards ceremony will be Nov. 10 at the Golf Club at Newcastle’s Saint Andrews Ballroom.
