Amid many hopeful contenders, Miss Eastside Mandy Schendel, a Newcastle resident, was crowned as Miss Washington on July 7 at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien. She’ll be off to Las Vegas in January where she hopes to bring back the coveted title of Miss America.

Twenty two girls from across the state competed in the swim suit, evening gown, interview and talent categories. Schendel’s singing performance, along with her poise and beauty contributed to her win.

She was also awarded the best interview and evening gown competition. An additional scholarship of $1,000 was bestowed to her direct from the Miss America organization for her community service.

Her platform is Do Something: “Enriching Youth, Cultivating Leaders.” She has also authored a book on the same subject.

Schendel is 22 years old and is a senior at Azuza College.
