Free car seat safety checks offered at YMCA

In an effort to support parents and caregivers to make sure a child fits securely in a car seat, Public Health – Seattle & King County is hosting free child car seat check-up events — including one in Newcastle— in east and south King County.

The Newcastle event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29 at the Coal Creek Family YMCA, 13750 Newcastle Golf Road.

Attendees should bring their car, car seat and child/infant to learn how to properly install the car seat. The event will be an opportunity for parents or soon-to-be parents to have their child safety seat checked by a certified child safety seat technician for safe installation.

Educational materials will be available as well.

Suspect in Newcastle Key Bank robbery arrested

The man suspected of robbing the Newcastle branch of Key Bank at about 10:30 a.m. June 14 was arrested June 22, according to statement from Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

He is believed to be responsible for two other bank robberies in Mt. Vernon and in Moses Lake.

The FBI Safe Streets Task Force worked immediately following the Newcastle robbery to identify the suspect, locate him and take him into custody.

“Our praise to the FBI for their great work,” Irvine said. “We appreciate their efforts.”

Newcastle honors fallen officer with Police Day in the Park

Ten years ago this week, King County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Herzog was tragically killed in the line of duty while working in the city of Newcastle. Herzog had worked in Newcastle for several years and knew many of the residents and businesses.

“One thing we most often hear from people about the way they remember Rich is his great connection with the public,” said Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.  “Citizens knew Rich and enjoyed interacting with him.”

This year, the City of Newcastle and the King County Sheriff’s Office will honor Rich’s memory by honoring the way Rich interacted with the public he served at Police Day in the Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 23 at Lake Boren Park.

Students honored with Newcastle Running Club scholarship

Three high school seniors have each been awarded a $1,400 scholarship from the nonprofit Newcastle Running Club.

Awards were given to Liberty High School student Annie Trumbull, of Issaquah; Hazen High School student Priscilla Yu, of Renton; and Interlake High School student Jorge Moreno-Nunez, of Newcastle. All three students demonstrated a willingness to give back to their communities and all are college bound to further their education.

Winners were chosen based on equal parts of community involvement, grade point average, SAT or ACT test scores, financial need and an essay.

Dentist’s license suspended for inappropriate conduct with patient, over prescribing drugs

State health officials have immediately suspended the license of Newcastle dentist Gil Furman, according to a Washington State Department of Health release.

The Dental Quality Assurance Commission and the Department of Health say Furman cannot practice safely because of inappropriate conduct with a female patient and over prescribing controlled drugs.

Furman cannot practice in Washington until the charges are resolved.

Service group seeks volunteers to ready Newcastle, Hazelwood elementary schools

For the third year in a row, a local service group is building teams of volunteers who will give up a Sunday afternoon in August to help Newcastle elementary school teachers prepare their classrooms.

Volunteers are needed to organize, decorate, clean and build supplies like bulletin boards. Outside work is needed too with power washers and landscaping tasks.

The Jubilee Day of Service will be from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 followed by a barbecue at Lake Boren Park. Volunteers are needed to serve Hazelwood Elementary School and Newcastle Elementary School. Read more

Improvements coming to to Olympus stormwater pond

A project to update the Olympus stormwater detention pond at S.E. 84th Way will retrofit the existing facility to the 2009 King County Surface Water Design Manual standards to improve the pond’s ability in providing runoff treatment and detention prior to discharge into Boren Creek.

The project is adjacent to Lake Boren Park.

The detention pond will be excavated and divided into two cells and two catch basins. A stormwater 24- inch diameter inlet pipe will be installed.

The existing outlet pipe will be also be improved. This project was awarded funding through the Washington State Department of Ecology’s competitive grant process.

Newcastle branch of Key Bank reportedly robbed

This unidentified man is suspected of robbing the Newcastle branch of the Key Bank at approximately 10:30 a.m. June 14 on Coal Creek Parkway.

 NEW 4:35 p.m.— June 14, 2012

The Newcastle branch of Key Bank was robbed at about 10:30 a.m. June 14, according to statement from Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

The suspect, who was wearing a bandage on the left side of his face during the incident, robbed the Key Bank located at 6917 Coal Creek Parkway S.E.

He is described as a 6 foot, 240 pound black male in his 30s.

He is believed to be the same suspect who robbed the Bank of America on June 12 at 320 W. Kincaid St. in Mount Vernon due to similarities in appearance and method, said FBI spokeswoman Ayn Dietrich.

Dietrich said the details of how the robbery took place cannot be released at this time, but the robbery was not armed. She was not able to release how much money was taken from the bank, she said.

Residents who may have seen the man in the business area of Newcastle the morning of June 14 are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-222- 8477.

Renewal deadline for boat registration set for June 30

Summer boating is right around the corner, and so is the deadline for renewing boat and watercraft registration decals. In Washington, all boat registrations expire on June 30.

Boat registrations can be renewed online at the DOL website or in person at a neighborhood vehicle licensing office. Those who choose to renew at an office should make sure to note the registration number on the bow of the boat or watercraft and take that information to the office.

Due to budget cuts, DOL discontinued paper renewal notices for boats in 2010 and instead offered boat owners the opportunity to sign up to receive email renewal reminders.
