Tana Senn, of Mercer Island, emerged as the frontrunner among three possible replacements to fill the 41st District state representative seat vacated by Marcie Maxwell.

Maxwell, a Democrat, resigned her seat July 9 to take a job with the governor’s office. To fill the seat, members of her party nominate three candidates to replace her and present those nominations to the County Council.

The 41st district stretches from the northern parts of Renton to the southern parts of Sammamish, encompassing Mercer Island, Newcastle and parts of Issaquah and Bellevue. Read more

Legislator to hold telephone town hall meeting with residents

State Sen. Steve Litzow of Mercer Island encourages residents of the 41st Legislative District, including those in Newcastle, to join him for a telephone town-hall meeting  at 7 p.m. June 13.

The one-hour forum will be largely question-driven by constituents who will have the opportunity to discuss issues debated and actions taken during the 2012 legislative session.

Newcastle lawmakers invite residents to town hall meetings

Residents can join Newcastle legislators to discuss the ongoing session in Olympia at town hall meetings in Mercer Island and Newcastle next week.

Meet state Sen. Steve Litzow and state Reps. Judy Clibborn and Marcie Maxwell — 41st Legislative District lawmakers — at the Feb. 18 meetings. The sessions come as the Legislature confronts a $1.5 billion shortfall in the state budget.

The bipartisan delegation — Republican Litzow; Democrats Clibborn and Maxwell — plans to answer participants’ questions.

The morning meeting is scheduled for 10-11:30 a.m. at Hazelwood Elementary School, 7100 116th Ave. S.E., Newcastle.

Steve Litzow elected to represent Newcastle in state Senate

Republican Steve Litzow appears to be the next state senator to represent Newcastle after defeating incumbent Randy Gordon.

King County Elections completed a mandatory machine recount for the contest Wednesday afternoon. The unofficial results present a solid lead for Litzow, a Mercer Island councilman.

Democrat Gordon trailed Litzow by more than 1,000 votes in the days after the Nov. 2 election. The gap between the candidates slimmed to 194 votes — or 0.32 percent — as the county tallied ballots.

Newcastle state Senate race appears headed for recount

The last undecided race to represent Newcastle in Olympia appears to be headed for a recount.

State Sen. Randy Gordon trailed challenger Steve Litzow by more than 1,000 votes in the days after the Nov. 2 election. In the 15 days since the campaign ended, the gap between the Democrat Gordon and Republican Litzow has slimmed to 142 votes.

Under state law, a machine recount is required if the difference between the candidates is less than 2,000 votes and also less than one-half of 1 percent of the total number of votes cast for both candidates.

Clibborn appears to be headed for re-election

Incumbent Democrat state representative Judy Clibborn — who represents the 41st Legislative District, which includes Newcastle — trounced novice Republican candidate Stephen Strader 57 percent to 43 percent in initial election results released Tuesday night.

The race for the other 41st District House seat remained tighter on Election Day. Incumbent Democrat Marcie Maxwell pulled in 51.1 percent to 48.8 percent for Republican Peter Dunbar, a Mercer Island physician.
