City Council cancels meeting for National Night Out

The regular Aug. 4 Newcastle City Council meeting is canceled, so council members can visit community National Night Out parties.

National Night Out events heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime efforts and send a message that local neighborhoods are organized and won’t stand for crime.

Newcastle is joining forces with more than 16,000 communities nationwide to celebrate. National Night Out events involve more than 38 million people throughout the United States.

Contact your homeowners association to find out if your neighborhood has a gathering planned.

Newcastle plans National Night Out events

Newcastle will join cities across the country to celebrate National Night Out Aug. 5.

The event aims to heighten crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals about neighborhoods organized against criminal activity.

National Night Out is celebrated with neighborhood block parties, often visited by local law enforcement.

The Donegal Park neighborhood event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Donegal Park, 7319 125th Ave. S.E. Neighbors are encouraged to bring folding chairs and food for grilling on the park’s barbeque, said event coordinator Lorinda Ecklund. Read more

National Night Out comes to Newcastle and communities nationwide Tuesday.

As the event approaches, Newcastle News is seeking photos from National Night Out for upcoming coverage. Email your National Night Out photos and contact information to newcastle@isspress.com.

Several neighborhoods in Newcastle plan to observe the event.

The Olympus neighborhood will host a block party from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 6, though setup begins at 4:30 p.m. The party will be at 128th Avenue Southeast near the intersection of Southeast 80th Way. Read more

Newcastle’s Night Out to generate support for anti-crime programs

Newcastle will celebrate the 29th annual National Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 7.

The event aims to heighten crime prevention awareness,  generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, NNO estimates more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2012.

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, Newcastle celebrates with a variety of neighborhood events such as small informal gatherings, block parties, cookouts and visits from local officials and law enforcement.

Neighborhoods plan for National Night Out

Newcastle neighborhoods have started planning for National Night Out. The Aug. 2 event is a nationwide drug- and crime-prevention event from 7-10 p.m. that evening.

The Hazelwood Community Association will hold a community picnic at Donegal Park, 7319 125th Ave. S.E., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. All are welcome attend. A grill will be available for use, but attendees must bring their own food.
