Schools welcome new principals in changing of the guard

Students and staff members will notice some new faces roaming the halls when the 2014-2015 school year kicks off in September.

Both Newcastle and Hazelwood elementary schools will welcome new principals, while Hazen High School welcomes back a familiar face to lead its students.

Newcastle Elementary School Principal Rich Mellish will take over for outgoing Principal Marla Newton, who secured a position in the Federal Way School District.

Judy Busch will come out of retirement to temporarily assume the Hazelwood principal spot left open by Principal Cindy Farnsworth, who is now at the Meadow Crest Early Learning Center. Read more

Newcastle Elementary gets news principal

The lions have a new leader.

Richard Mellish will take over as Newcastle Elementary School’s principal, Issaquah School District Superintendent Ron Thiele announced in an email to the school community.

Mellish comes to Newcastle from the Mercer Island School District, where he served as principal of West Mercer Elementary School.

Elementary school principal is leaving

Newcastle Elementary School Principal Marla Newton announced May 30 that she is leaving at the end of the school year.

Newton has accepted a position in the Federal Way School District.

“I believe this is not only an opportunity for me professionally, but for Newcastle Elementary to continue to grow and develop with new ideas as well,” she said in an email to families. “I have every confidence that your next principal will be a leader with the energy, ideas and the heart necessary to care for and expand this school’s achievement levels in new ways into the future.”

Before coming to Newcastle in 2010, Newton served as principal at Apollo Elementary School.

The search for Newton’s replacement will begin in earnest, but first, Issaquah School District Superintendent Ron Thiele wants to know what traits the community would like to see in their new principal. Families can offer feedback in an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Newcastleprincipal14 until 4 p.m. June 9.

Superintendent seeks feedback on elementary principal search

Newcastle Elementary Principal Marla Newton announced May 30 that she has taken a position in the Federal Way School District.

“Marla truly has a heart for students and while she will be missed in Issaquah we wish her the very best in this next phase of her career,” said Issaquah School District superintendent Ron Thiele.

The search for Newton’s replacement will begin in earnest, but first, Thiele wants to know what traits the community would like to see in their new principal. Families can offer feedback in an online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Newcastleprincipal14 until 4 p.m. June 9.

“Along with our selection committee, I will work to ensure your next principal will inspire and lead Newcastle to new levels of achievement and hope to have this person hired by late June,” Thiele said.
