Multiple closures required for Seafair Air Show practice, shows

July 30, 2015

NEW — 6 a.m. July 30, 2015

As the U.S. Navy Blue Angels zoom above Lake Washington this week, drivers on Interstate 90 should prepare for traffic to slow to a crawl several times between Thursday and Sunday, and consider alternate routes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to close the Interstate 90 floating bridge five times to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians while the Blue Angels practice for and perform at the Seafair Air Show. The closures are to keep the public and pilots safe, and to minimize distractions.

The closures will extend from Interstate 5 in Seattle to Island Crest Way on Mercer Island. Certain I-90 and I-5 ramps will also close 30 minutes to one hour before flight times. Drivers who need to cross Lake Washington should plan to do so at least one hour before the closures or use an alternate route, such as Interstate 405, state Route 520 or state Route 522. Read more

Fire destroys Newcastle home

April 30, 2015

A fire destroyed a Newcastle home in the 10900 block of Southeast 66th Street on April 13.

All five tenants in the two-story rental home at the time escaped without injuries thanks, largely, to working smoke detectors that alerted some of the sleeping occupants, according to a Bellevue Fire Department news release.

Bellevue firefighters responded to a 911 call at about 8:15 p.m. When the first crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames that could be seen from Interstate 405 and Mercer Island. Callers also reported hearing multiple explosions.

Investigators determined the fire started in a barbecue located on a porch on the north side of the house, said Lt. Richard Burke, community liaison officer with the Bellevue Fire Department. Read more

Prepare for weekend closures on I-405

August 9, 2013

NEW — 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9, 2013

The Washington State Department of Transportation is warning drivers to prepare for weekend closures on Interstate 405.

The ramp from northbound state Route 167 to northbound Interstate 405 in Renton and northbound I-405 through Bellevue will shut down starting the evening of Aug. 9 for critical repairs and maintenance work.

Both sections of highway will close at 10 p.m. Friday. Crews will begin reopening northbound I-405 at 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12. All lanes and ramps, including the state Route 167 ramp, will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. This work is weather dependent.

All lanes of northbound I-405 from Southeast Eighth Street to state Route 520, as well as the eastbound and westbound I-90 ramps to northbound I-405 will be closed. Read more

Simultaneous closure of state Route 520 and northbound I-405 is this weekend

July 12, 2013

NEW — 10:15 a.m. July 12, 2013

A packed weekend is planned on the Eastside for crews working on critical maintenance and preservation projects on state Route 520 and Interstate 405.

From 10 p.m. July 12 to 5 a.m. July 14, crews will close all northbound lanes of I-405 through downtown Bellevue for concrete panel replacement. Crews will also close the 520 floating bridge for its annual inspection, and culvert installation.

The state Department of Transportation is asking drivers to plan ahead and help reduce congestion by taking transit, carpooling, using alternate routes or delaying trips.

Drivers should plan for congestion, particularly on Interstate 90 near the detour routes, westbound state Route 520 approaching I-405, and northbound I-405 where all drivers must exit at Southeast Eighth Street.

Alaskan Way Viaduct closure could impact Eastside traffic

October 20, 2011

NEW — 11:45 a.m., Oct. 20, 2011

The impending Alaskan Way Viaduct shutdown could cause traffic congestion to ripple far from the Seattle waterfront, transportation officials said days before the aging structure closes.

The state Department of Transportation plans to close the viaduct from 7:30 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Oct. 31 as crews demolish viaduct sections, build a bypass at the southern end and construct a southbound off ramp.

The planned closure is the longest ever for a Seattle-area highway. The viaduct serves almost 110,000 motorists each day — and roads throughout the region could clog as commuters seek alternate routes. Read more

A small black bear was hit sometime overnight between June 30 and July 1 on Interstate 405 near Newcastle, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A motorist called in around 2 a.m. to report an animal carcass on the freeway, said Julie Startup, a spokeswoman for the patrol.

Troopers responded and found the dead bear, which Startup said had been hit hard and was in pieces. They moved it off the freeway and notified wildlife officials, she said.
