Italene Gaddis joins artists at day of music

Musician Italene Gaddis has no problem traveling across Western Washington, performing daily at various sites.

Luckily for her, she won’t have to travel far for a special July 25 gig.

The 90-year-old Newcastle resident’s commute will be just minutes when she performs at the Newcastle Library’s day of music.

Gaddis’ performance is just a small part of a day dedicated to music education, music crafts and music programs for all ages.

The “Music Space” event starts at 10 a.m. At that time, attendees can take advantage of three hands-on activities. Read more

Friends group hosts May book sale

The Friends of the Newcastle Library will host a book sale May 14-16.

The group will take over the library lobby, where it will sell hundreds of books and media materials for all ages in a wide-ranging selection of genres, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 15 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 16. The Newcastle Library is at 12901 Newcastle Way.

The group will also host a members-only presale from 5-9 p.m. May 14.

The Friends of the Newcastle Library sponsors additional library programs through its book sales. It gladly accepts donations of gently used books throughout the year. Bring them to the library’s front desk. Read more

Winner to sing at library’s first naturalization ceremony

O say, can you sing “The Star-Spangled Banner?”

If so, the Newcastle Library wants to test your patriotic pipes at its July 12 singing competition.

“The Voice of the Newcastle Library” contest will crown a local crooner, who will then get the honor of singing the national anthem at the library’s first naturalization ceremony July 23.

Friends group hosts book sale

The Friends of the Newcastle Library will host its annual book sale March 26-29.

The sale begins March 26 for paid members of the Friends group. Only members will be allowed to purchase books that day, from 3-9 p.m. Memberships will be available at the library door.

It continues through Saturday with sales open to the public. The sale begins at 10 a.m. the three remaining days, but wraps up at 9 p.m. March 27, at 6 p.m. March 28 and at 5 p.m. March 29.

Friends group hosts evening of cookies and conversation

The Friends of the Newcastle Library will host an evening of cookies and conversation at its June 26 meeting.

The informal social gathering will allow visitors an opportunity to share ideas for future programs, and offer suggestions about ways the Friends group can enhance the library experience.

A Newcastle librarian will make a brief presentation, and the Friends group will spend a few minutes completing routine business, prior to the social.

“The main event is getting to know our members,” Friends group secretary Sue Beverly wrote in an email.

Library book sale nets more than $2,000

The Friends of the Newcastle Library raised $2,180 during its three-day book sale, and an extra $247 in cash donations alone.

The organization collected donations of books throughout the year, accumulating more than 130 boxes filled with materials that were briskly sold at the sale.

The money raised from the sale will allow the group to fund extra programs at the Newcastle Library for the next year.
