Scouts experience need for speed

There were flashier setups in the mix.

One car sported an elaborate R2-D2 paint job.

Others boasted more intricate carving techniques, taking the shapes of a banana and a skateboard.

But 9-year-old Will Slaton’s gray Pinewood Derby car maintained a more modest approach.

Sure, special precautions were taken to make sure the wheels and axles had been sanded down to offer the least resistance on the track.

A small amount of graphite had been added to the back end to give the rear some weight, while the sides of the car had been whittled down to create a more aerodynamic end product.

But what Slaton’s car lacked in pizzazz, it made up for in speed. It was crowned champion of Newcastle Cub Scout Pack 738’s 2012 Pinewood Derby held Jan.13 at Newcastle Elementary School.

As champion, he’ll go on to face more formidable foes at the district level, he said, though he isn’t changing a thing.

Sign-up for Cub Scouts in time for the Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout Pack 738 is still accepting children from first to fourth grade for the pack’s annual Pinewood Derby in January.

The Pinewood Derby, which is held each January, gives Cub Scouts the opportunity to work with an adult to design and build a small racecar.

In the Pinewood Derby — the pack’s largest event of the year — the Scouts design and build small race cars with an adult. On race day, the Scouts race their cars against three other Scouts’ cars on a track.

The 2011 Pinewood Derby will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at Newcastle Elementary School.

Cub Scout Pack 738 to host recruitment Friday

NEW — 3 p.m. Sept. 23, 2010

Newcastle-based Cub Scout Pack 738 will host a recruitment event at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Newcastle Elementary School’s multipurpose room.

Boys from first to fifth grade can join the pack, and many of the boys from the pack will attend to talk about their experiences as members. Parents from the pack will attend to answer parents’ questions and give details about the various aspects of the pack.
