Bellevue Police arrest Newcastle postal worker for assault

Bellevue Police arrested a 55-year-old postal worker from Newcastle for assault Oct. 3.

Police responded to the reported assault on 160th Avenue Southeast, in front of Phantom Lake Elementary School, at 11:15 a.m., according to a Bellevue Police Department release.

When officers arrived, they learned a postal worker, driving a marked postal-service vehicle, intentionally hit an individual with the postal vehicle she was driving.

The incident started when the victim allegedly saw the postal worker yelling obscenities at another citizen. The victim became concerned about the postal worker’s behavior, and decided to take a photo of the vehicle in order to file a complaint with the postal service. Read more

County deputy found asleep in patrol car is fired

King County Sheriff John Urquhart has fired a deputy who was arrested in Newcastle on New Year’s Eve after being found asleep in his patrol car and showing signs of impairment.

The deputy was ultimately found to have prescription drugs in his system, according to a previous statement from the Bellevue Police Department, which was asked to handle the criminal investigation, while the King County Sheriff’s Office handled the administrative investigation.

Deputy Whitney Richtmyer, 47, was fired for violations involving criminal conduct and dishonest statements related to his actions on New Year’s Eve, and a subsequent investigation that found various paperwork in his car hadn’t been turned in over a four-year period, Urquhart said July 17. Bellevue P.D. concludes investigation into New Year’s Eve incident

The Bellevue Police Department has completed its investigation into a King County Sheriff’s deputy who was arrested in Newcastle last New Year’s Eve.

Police arrested the deputy in Newcastle Dec. 31, after a citizen called to report an officer was passed out behind the wheel in a parked patrol car. The deputy was placed under arrest for physical control of a motor vehicle, the legal equivalent of a DUI when no driving is observed.

The officer was not a member of the Newcastle Police Department, according to an email from Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine, and wasn’t working overtime in the city.

A certified drug recognition expert conducted the three-month investigation and showed the deputy was impaired by prescription medications, according to a release from Bellevue Police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate.
