There has always been a special sense of admiration between the Evergreen and Hazen girls soccer programs.

It started a couple of years ago, as the Highlanders waited to play at Renton Memorial Stadium. Evergreen, playing the game before theirs, was getting blown out, 12-0.

“Our girls saw firsthand what that does to a team,” Hazen coach Ken Matthews said in a news release. “After the game our players asked me if they could talk to Evergreen and cheer them up. Ever since then, we’ve kind of been big supporters of their program.”

So, when the two schools met on the field Tuesday night, the Highlanders wanted to do something special for Evergreen, and recognize “what the school has been going through” after the death of football player Kenney Bui, Matthews said.

Hazen has a tradition of wearing different hair ribbons for each game. Hazen wore green hair ribbons this game, a nod to Evergreen’s school color, and made sure each Evergreen player had a ribbon as well. The ribbon exchange took place during warm-ups, Matthews said.

The Highlanders went on to win 7-0, improving to 2-0 in Seamount League play.

Freshman forward Madison Taylor (2), senior forward and captain Taylor Lenton, freshman mid Madison Kem, freshman mid Nicole Lenton, freshman defender Anna Browne and freshman forward Bella Colasurdo all scored for Hazen.
