Council to host budget retreat Tuesday

The Newcastle City Council will hold a daylong budget retreat Tuesday.

It begins at 11 a.m. at The Golf Club at Newcastle, and will cover such topics as the city’s revenue forecast, examination of Newcastle’s Capital Improvement Program and more.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting, but there is no opportunity for public comment. The council’s regular 7 p.m. Sept. 1 meeting is canceled. The budget retreat is expected to go until 6 p.m.

Windy weather could cause power outages

An August windstorm is already causing scattered power outages across the area.

Puget Sound Energy offers up-to-date outage information, including restoration estimates, on its outage map here. Customers can also get the most up-to-date outage information, or report an outage, by downloading the myPSE app for smartphones here.

Do not call 911 if your power is out, unless your safety is at risk. Report the outage to PSE online, or by calling 1-888-225-5773.

During storms, customers should keep an emergency kit handy and stay away from downed power lines, according to advice posted on PSE’s website. Read more

Retail Properties of America, Inc. buys Coal Creek Marketplace

Retail Properties of America, Inc. is the new owner and operator of Newcastle’s Coal Creek Marketplace.

The company announced today that it acquired the 56,000 square foot property anchored by QFC for approximately $17.6 million.

“Coal Creek Marketplace is a dominant grocery-anchored center that serves an affluent Eastside trade area with significant barriers to entry,” Michael Hazinski, vice president, director of investments, western division said in a statement.

Coal Creek Marketplace is the company’s fifth Seattle-area acquisition in the past 18 months, Hazinski added. The company’s Seattle footprint is now more than 1.2 million square feet. Read more

City hit with rash of car break-ins

The city of Newcastle experienced an influx in car break-ins this past week, according to an Aug. 25 e-alert from Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

The thefts occurred at night at various apartment and condominium complexes. The thief entered the vehicles by prying doors or breaking windows.

Almost all of the items stolen from vehicles had been left in plain sight, Irvine said.

“Remember, your duffle bag of dirty gym clothes looks like a bag with potential valuables to someone with criminal intent,” she said. Read more

Questions needed for Newcastle candidate forum

Meet the men and women vying for Newcastle City Council spots at an October candidate forum.

The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and the Newcastle Library are jointly hosting a moderated forum Oct. 7 at the Newcastle Library, 12901 Newcastle Way.

The event will feature questions submitted by Newcastle citizens. Candidates for Position Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are expected to attend.

There are four Newcastle City Council seats with expiring terms, but only one race includes more than a single candidate. Read more

Lake Washington Boulevard blocked

A broken-down semitruck and trailer is causing delays on Lake Washington Boulevard.

The truck, which has a large crane on the top, is stalled at the hairpin turn on Lake Washington Boulevard between Denny’s and the Newcastle Shell Station.

The road was partially blocked with traffic control as of 4 p.m. Thursday, according to an e-news blast from the city.

It will be fully blocked later tonight though, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. as workers clear the roadway.

The city says to avoid the area, if possible.

Brown Bear to offer free car washes Aug. 27

Brown Bear Car Wash celebrates its 58th anniversary with free car washes Aug. 27

Brown Bear will give away free “Beary Clean” car washes at 21 of its automated “tunnel wash” locations in the Puget Sound area.

For the past nine years, the Seattle-based, family-owned Brown Bear has provided more than 225,000 free washes on the company’s anniversary and Veterans Day. Last year’s anniversary event generated 26,437 complimentary washes.

Packed Aug. 18 council meeting includes Energize Eastside presentations

If you want to get a seat at Tuesday’s Newcastle City Council meeting, you better get there early.

Puget Sound Energy’s Energize Eastside project is on the Aug. 18 agenda, and whenever that’s the case, it always draws a large crowd.

Puget Sound Energy and the Coalition of Eastside Neighborhoods for Sensible Energy will both give presentations about the proposed plans to include a new electric substation and higher capacity transmission lines through Newcastle, Redmond, Bellevue, Renton and Kirkland.

Those presentations begin at 6 p.m., an hour before the regular council meeting begins. Read more

This is the third history feature installment about the historic Coal Miner’s Cemetery, on 129th Avenue Southeast, south of the Newcastle Library.

Every cemetery has many stories to tell. Some are sad, some are heartwarming and some help us remember how we have grown as a people.

BackTrackingAt the time of the first burial in 1878, it was unheard of for whites and blacks to be buried in the same cemetery. Chinese would also be excluded. The Newcastle Miner’s Cemetery has both ethnic groups, though there is a distinction.
