Incumbents get the call in early election results

The voters have spoken, and after early election results trickled out Nov. 4, it appears that local incumbents won’t be leaving their seats anytime soon.

All candidates representing Newcastle in both the state Legislature and on Capitol Hill, have healthy leads over their opponents after King County released the first batch of Election Day results at 8:15 p.m.

In the 9th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Adam Smith (D) is well on his way to re-election with 69 percent of the vote. Republican challenger Doug Basler received about 30 percent of the vote.

Essay contest open to eighth graders

The King County Civil Rights Commission invites all eighth-grade students to write essays about the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The top three writers in this 16th annual writing contest will receive trophies.

Essays should focus on the theme of voting rights and include ideas about Dr. King’s legacy of peace and justice.
