Rory Magana (second from left), Hazen High School wrestling coach, stands with his wife Alyssa, mother Susie and brother Kyle at last year’s Taking Down Pancreatic Cancer event.

The Hazen High School wrestling team will do its part to fight back against a deadly disease with its annual Taking Down Pancreatic Cancer dual meet Jan. 17.

The event, in its fourth year, was created when Hazen coach Rory Magana’s father battled pancreatic cancer. His father died of the disease in 2011.

“We’re carrying our favorite sport over to a cause that’s greater than ourselves,” Magana said, “and that’s the most important thing.”

Last year’s event at Highline High School included a bake sale, raffles and the sale of T-shirts to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. This year, attendees should expect more of the same, Magana said, along with an evening of top-flight wrestling competition.

The year’s meet features teams from Hazen, Highline, Oak Harbor and Liberty. Doors open at 6 p.m. at Hazen High School, 1101 Hoquiam Ave. N.E., Renton.
