The Newcastle City Council elected a new mayor and deputy mayor at its Jan. 7 meeting. Mayor Steve Buri (left) and Deputy Mayor John Drescher (right) will each serve two-year terms.

The Newcastle City Council ushered in 2014 with elections for the mayor and deputy mayor positions at its Jan. 7 meeting.

Steve Buri will serve as mayor, while newcomer John Drescher is the new deputy mayor. Both will serve two year terms.

Buri and former Deputy Mayor Lisa Jensen were each nominated for the mayor’s spot, while Drescher and former Mayor Rich Crispo were the finalists for the deputy mayor position.

Prior to the elections, John Dulcich, Crispo and Drescher were sworn in to office. Dulcich and Crispo ran unopposed in the November elections, easily securing victories. Drescher defeated opponent Mark Greene to fill the seat vacated by retiring Councilman Bill Erxleben.
