John Drescher celebrated Election Day with friends and family, packed to the rim in The Wooly Toad at The Golf Club at Newcastle.

At about 8:15 p.m., he was sitting alone in a corner, glued to his computer. When he clicked refresh, he saw the results, and called over his wife Sally to show her what he saw.

As ballots for the 2013 general election begin to roll in, Drescher has established a dominant lead over challenger Mark Greene in the Newcastle City Council’s only contested race.

With more than 81 percent, or 1,042 votes – of about 22 percent of the ballots counted so far – Drescher leads Greene for the council’s sixth position. Greene earned about 17 percent of the vote, or 228 votes.

The winner of the contested race will replace longtime Councilman Bill Erxleben.

Drescher and his wife Sally moved to the Wynfield Ridge neighborhood in 2005. They’ve since added three children to their family.

He is the executive director of TechNet Northwest, a bi-partisan technology trade group, and also serves as the chairman of the Newcastle Planning Commission.

He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University.

“I come with a perspective that City Council folks really are the servants of the people,” he said in an August interview. “I feel that if I’m elected it will be an honor, and it will be an opportunity to serve and give back.”

Incumbents Mayor Rich Crispo and Councilman John Dulcich were re-elected after they ran unopposed in the election. Each received more than 98 percent of the vote.
