Hazen High School student Emma Tuschhoff and Liberty High School students Neil Chakravarty and Cassandra Cox qualified as semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students are among 16,000 high school seniors across the nation who are in the running for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million.

Students began by completing the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.
