Dr. Merri Rieger

Just a week after she spent a day in the district, meeting with staff and community members, the Renton School Board chose Dr. Merri Rieger as the district’s new superintendent.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Merri Rieger as our new superintendent,” said Board President Lynn Desmarais in a statement. “Merri has the depth of experience and sense of vision that make her a perfect fit for the Renton School District.”

Rieger is currently the chief student achievement officer with the Kent School District. Prior to that, she spent time as a high school principal in the Bremerton School District and as the dean of students and a high school teacher in the Auburn School District. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at Washington State University.

The Renton School Board chose Rieger from a pool of 12 applicants who applied for the position to fill the vacancy left by Mary Alice Heuschel. Heuschel joined Gov. Jay Inslee’s administration as chief of staff in January.

Former Hazelwood Elementary School educator Vera Risdon has served as the district’s interim superintendent.

Rieger is expected to take office July 1.
