Newcastle residents can celebrate National Night Out with at least two neighborhood events Aug. 7.

Members of the Olympus neighborhood, in conjunction with celebrating the neighborhood’s 25th anniversary, will have a large picnic at 5 p.m. on 128th Avenue Southeast, which will be barricaded at Southeast 80th Way.

Police will visit the party, and kid-friendly activities, such as sidewalk chalk drawing, will be available. Hamburgers, hot dogs and nonmeat patties will be provided, as well as buns, condiments and utensils. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs, drinks and a side dish or dessert to share.

Donegal Park’s event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 7319 125th Ave. S.E.

Neighbors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and food. People can cook their food on a barbecue grill that will be available at the event. Police will also be on hand to provide fingerprinting services for children. Members of the Bellevue Fire Department are expected to arrive with their truck for photographic opportunities.

National Night Out is a nationwide event that heightens neighborhood crime awareness, generates support for local anticrime efforts, and strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
