Newcastle will celebrate the 29th annual National Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 7.

The event aims to heighten crime prevention awareness,  generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, NNO estimates more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2012.

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, Newcastle celebrates with a variety of neighborhood events such as small informal gatherings, block parties, cookouts and visits from local officials and law enforcement.
