Regional Animal Services of King County is offering a treat for Halloween — reduced adoption fees for cats and kittens through Oct. 31.

The agency reduced the adoption fee for cats from $55 to $30 and from $100 to $75 for kittens.

October is also Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month.

Regional Animal Services of King County includes a pet license, neutering or spaying, microchipping and initial vaccinations in the dog adoption fee. The fees range from $100 to $250, depending on the dog’s age and breed.

“There’s never been a better time to adopt a pet from us,” agency Interim Manager Glynis Frederiksen said in a news release. “We have all shapes, sizes, and colors of cats and dogs waiting for their forever homes. Plus, if you come in before Halloween, adoption fees for cats are just $30, and for kittens, it’s $75.”

See pets ready for adoption at the King County Pet Adoption Center in Kent or online. The shelter, 21615 64th Ave. S., is open 3-6 p.m. on Monday, noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Regional Animal Services of King County also reminds pet owners to follow some simple safety tips before ghouls and goblins arrive for Halloween.

  • Never feed candy to a pet, especially chocolate. If you suspect your dog or cat got into some Halloween treats, contact a veterinarian immediately.
  • Costumes can be scary to some pets. If a pet is easily spooked by strangers or loud noises, consider keeping it safe in a pet crate or confined to a quiet room as trick-or-treaters roam.
  • Be sure your pet is wearing a collar featuring a securely attached license securely as you open the door for trick-or-treaters or Halloween party guests.
  • If your pet does accidentally escape, check all local shelters and animal rescue groups, and go to search for strays in the area.
