Liberty falls to Issaquah, Hazen gets second win in week two action

Liberty High School has opened the season with a 0-2 start, losing to the Issaquah Eagles 23-13 in a non-league game Friday night at Issaquah in Gary Moore Stadium.

Starting wide receiver Jake Bakamus sealed the win for the Eagles with an interception from Liberty quarterback Jordan West with 5:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Liberty opened the game with a rushing touchdown from senior running back Hamilton Noel, taking a 7-0 lead on their first offensive drive with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

Newcastle city clerk resigns from position

Newcastle City Clerk Bob Baker announced Friday he will resign from the position after working for the city for nearly six years, citing new opportunities to work closer to home and more time to pursue other interests.

His last day working for the city will be Sept. 23.

In an email to city staff and the City Council, he said his departure is bittersweet, stating while  it isn’t easy to resolve every issue, “each of us has an opportunity to make a difference when we maintain an open mind, put aside personal differences and realize each of us wants what’s best for ourselves, our constituents and the community as a whole.” 

“After nearly six years of service to customers – internal and external – in this great community, I am proud to say we set goals, met goals, and together, accomplished some outstanding results,” he wrote.

Free knotweed workshop offered Sept. 17

Instructor Frances Lucero with the King County Noxious Weed Program will be on hand at a free workshop that aims to educate residents on how invasive knotweed can be controlled and eradicated by use of herbicide injections.

The workshop, which is organized by the Newcastle Weed Warriors, the city of Newcastle and the KCNWP, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Lake Boren Park.

Car stolen from driveway

A man reported his 1991 red Volkswagen Golf was stolen from his driveway on the 12100 block of Southeast 75 Place on Aug. 26. The theft was believed to have occurred around 4:15 a.m., and the car was worth about $1,500.

Assault arrest

A 35-year-old woman was arrested for fourth degree assault on Aug. 29 at her Coal Creek Parkway apartment after she reportedly bit and hit her male roommate. The incident was reported at about 12:30 that morning.

Trailer spray painted with gang signs

A trailer registered to the Talerico Excavation Company out of Puyallup was reportedly spray painted with gang-related symbols on the 7100 block of 133 Avenue Southeast sometime between Aug. 19 and Aug. 22. The vandalism will cost about $200 to paint over.
