Contributed Raptors team members celebrate after winning their division championship at the Triple Crown World Series July 30.

Hi Greg,

Attached in this email is a photo I’d like to use for the September edition of the Newcastle News. The story will be called “Eastside Raptors,” so if you could name the photo the same thing, that would be great. Caption information is available in the body of the email or pasted below:
Attached is a pic from the Raptors website that has three of the Newcastle kids – Trevor Curl (getting the big hug from the coach for the last out), with Rory Brown, and Lucas Senatore coming to join the celebration.
Let me know if I can help with anything else! Thanks!

Sincerely,
Christina Lords

On Saturday, July 30 the Raptors, a select baseball team from the Eastside earned the title of 2011 Triple Crown World Series 2-Div Champions winning the final 11-6 in Park City Utah over the Salt Lake City Blast.  Led by Head Coach Ron Hay and Asst Coach Sean Lincecum, the team includes five alumnus of the Newcastle Baseball Club; Rory Brown, Trevor Curl, Michael Morgan, Alex Pritchard, and Lucas Senatore.

The road to the Raptorsâ?? Triple Crown World Series title started in April with a second place finish in the Wenatchee Triple Crown tournament, earning the team a berth in the World Series.  The Raptors went on to win three other WA State tournaments, including the Bothell Triple Crown Memorial Weekend tournament.  The 10u World Series featured 26 teams from California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Washington â?? all finalists in regional Triple Crown tournaments.  The World Series tournament ran from July 25 through July 30.

Playing seven games in four days to reach the Championship, the Raptors went into the championship game having earned a string of four dramatic â??come-from-behindâ? victories including two extra inning/overtime wins.

Game Background for Semi-final and Final game with key contributions by Newcastle players.
The team arrived in Park City, location for a number of the 2002 Olympic events, this past Monday to acclimate to the altitude and warmer weather.  The 10u World Series featured 26 teams from California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Washington â?? all finalists in regional Triple Crown tournaments.  After a fast start on Monday, a 16-1 win in bracket play, the Raptors lost two games on Tuesday to Elite Orange from California, and the Blast from Salt Lake City forcing a key game Wednesday against the Avalanche from Utah.

The Raptors quickly found themselves in trouble giving up 4 runs in the first inning (two off a massive home run blast) the Raptors looked destined to lose the game, unable to breakthrough against the Blast pitching through 3 innings.  However, strong defensive play and solid pitching from the Raptors kept the game within reach.  Facing a 4-0 deficit in the 4th inning the Raptors exploded for 3 back to back home runs on three straight pitches (including a leadoff HR by Senatore).  Morgan delivered an RBI double scoring Pritchard from second to tie the score at 4 all.  In the bottom of the sixth and final inning, with the Raptors leading 7-5, the Blast brought the tying run to the plate with two outs and a runner on first.  Curl, who had played most of the game at 3rd base and just moved to 2nd , snagged a line drive towards the hole at second for the final out and notching his 8th put out of the game.

The Final on Saturday featured a rematch with the Blast who beat the Cyclones from Las Vegas to earn another shot at the Raptors.  This time it was the Raptors jumping off to a fast start with 2 runs in the top of the first inning.  The Blast cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the first, but Senatoreâ??s strong pitching limited the Blast to 3 runs through 3 innings while the Raptors continued to add onto the score with RBIâ??s recorded by Brown, Curl, and Pritchard.  The Raptors led 11-5 through the bottom of the 4th when the Blast mounted their own comeback attempt.  A run in the bottom of the 5th narrowed the margin to 11-6.  The Raptors were unable to add to their lead in the top of the 6th and in their half of the order the Blast looked to at least even the score and had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out.  A strikeout set up a showdown with one the Blastâ??s better hitters.  On a 1-0 pitch the batter hit a hard ground ball to the Raptorâ??s pitcher.  The ball ricocheted of the pitcherâ??s glove looking destined to result in 2 runs and another base runner for the Blast.  With one runner already across the plate and the other rounding third base Curl, charging from third barehanded the ball, made the throw to first base, just beating the runner for the final out of the World Series.
