Hazen baseball’s playoff run came to an end May 13 in a heartbreaking, extra-inning 4-3 loss to Capital High School in the second game of the West Central District III Tournament.

Hazen got off to a hot start early thanks to back-to-back RBI-doubles by Zac Kolterman and Jeff Beckman in the first inning. Cody Moorhead knocked an RBI-single of his own, giving Hazen a 3-0 lead.

Capital struck back, adding single runs in the first, second and third innings, but then both offenses stalled. The game remained tied heading into the seventh inning, when a delayed balk call overwrote another RBI-double by Kolterman that would have driven in the winning run. The call was made after the play was finished.

Hazen lost in the bottom of the eighth inning after a Capital batter sent the ball into the right-field gap for an extra-bases hit. The fielder bobbled the ball and overthrew third base, allowing the runner to cross the plate on the error for an inside-the-park home run.
