Newcastle will celebrate Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 in Lake Boren Park.

The event is free and will celebrate sustainability with a variety of festivities, including educational mini-seminars, gardening clinics with master gardeners from Washington State University’s extension program, a recycle relay by Waste Management and an on-sight restoration project by the Newcastle Weed Warriors.

“We are proud to present this event, which fosters our community’s love for the environment,” said Grace Stiller, chair of Newcastle Earth Day,” Earth Day Chair Grace Stiller said in a news release.

“We have created a day that the entire family will enjoy, from wonderful music, children’s events and mini-seminars to booths featuring green products and services presented by businesses and non-profit environmental organizations,” she said.

Local author Carmela Ramaglia will emcee the event. The Hazen High School jazz band will perform at noon, and the Boeing Employees’ Concert Band will perform at 1 p.m.

Mr. Scrappy Recycling will also be attendance throughout the day to collect items such as appliances, engines, monitors, tools and scrap metal. Collection trucks will be on the access road just west of the park. Call Mr. Scrappy Recycling at 425-591-3320 for a full list of accepted items.

Organizers are still seeking volunteers to assist with the festivities and vendors to promote their sustainable products and services. Volunteer or become a vendor by emailing organizer Grace Stiller at gracestiller@comcast.net.
