Here is a photo for the November Newcastle. It’s wild art slugged as “opera star,” and it’s a photo of a local lady who starred in an opera production of “Oliver.” Thanks!

Tim, Ms. Sovcovova (being a woman) will only say she’s late 20-ish, early 30-ish! Petra’s cell number is 425-753-9430, in case you’d like to chat with her.  I’ll try to assemble some photos for you.

Afternoon, Kathleen and Tim!
I hope you will see fit to include in your next issue this story of great young Newcastle soprano playing a key role in the upcoming Lyric Opera Northwest presentation of OLIVER! at the Moore Theatre on October 17, 2010 (4:00 PM). I realize you may need to edit it for after the fact if it cannot appear in front of the event.   Her name is Petra Sovcovova and in her role as the Widow Corney, she is side-splitting hilarious besides being an operatic-strength singer, Attached is a formal news release written especially for your paper, as well as photo, and an OLIVER! flyer. (I am expecting to get my hands on a better, more recent photo at any moment and will forward that when I do.I’ve also included the text of the release in the body of this email (see below) for your convenient reference.   Let me know if you want me to set up an interview or arrange to have you and /or a photograph gain entrance to a rehearsal.   Thanks, as always, for covering stories of Newcastle residents excelling in the arts, sports and other endeavors.

Newcastle Soprano in Key Role of OLIVER! at Moore Theatre

October 4, 2010, Seattle WA —- Seattle native and Newcastle resident Petra Sovcovova acts, sings and dances the role of the Widow Corney in Seattle Theatre Groupâ??s presentation of a Lyric Opera Northwest production of the beloved Broadway musical OLIVER! at the historic Moore Theatre.

The show is one night only — on Sunday, October 17, 2010 (4:00 PM).

This â??must seeâ? musical is a full-throated production that will touch and thrill the whole family — fully costumed, accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by David Spring, featuring 20 of the greater Seattle areaâ??s most talented children, and including dancers and singers from both the Broadway and operatic traditions!

Over the past year, Petra has worked tirelessly to gain and perform the roles of Micaela from Bizetâ??s Carmen; Musetta and Mimi from Pucciniâ??s La bohème; Rosina from Mozartâ??s Le Nozze di Figaro; and Liu from Pucciniâ??s Turandot. Recently, she performed pieces outside the operatic canon; she worked with British composer Andrew Keeling, sang for humanitarian bene?ts for the homeless at multiple venues in Seattle, and had the honor to perform for the First Secretary of the Czech Embassy.

Recently she recorded eight operatic arias with Canadian Juno/Grammy nominated and award-winning artist/producer Tom Keenlyside and made her international debut in Italy singing Rosina in Mozartâ??s Le Nozze di Figaro and Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutti.

Says fellow cast member and lyric tenor Kim Cooney (Dr. Grimswig in Oliver!) of Petra: â??Petra squeezes every last drop of hilarity from the character of Widow Corney as she flirts with Mr. Bumble in â??I Shall Screamâ?. She provides the comic relief that buffers the dark side of Victorian London, yet never forgets to make the most of her operatic soprano training and talent.â?

Based on Charles Dickensâ?? immortal novel Oliver Twist and with music and lyrics by British pop composer Lionel Bart, Oliver! was a huge hit from its debut in 1960. It was the first British musical to transfer successfully to Broadway (2,618 performances in London and 774 on Broadway. In 1968 Oliver! was made into a film which won several Oscars, including Best Film.

OLIVER! is directed by the international soprano and baritone team of Pamela Casella Nim and Craig Heath Nim, founders of Lyric Opera Northwest. The choreographer is Pamela Turpen assisted by Jesse Stoddard.

Presented in association with the Seattle Theatre Group with whom Lyric Opera Northwest shares a commitment to nurturing young talent and perpetuating a love of theatre arts in all generations, OLIVER! is a visual and aural feast for those who might have missed this beloved favorite in the past and for those who have seen in again and again yet ask â??Please sir, might I have more?â?
