Cub Scout Pack 738 is still accepting children from first to fourth grade for the pack’s annual Pinewood Derby in January.

The Pinewood Derby, which is held each January, gives Cub Scouts the opportunity to work with an adult to design and build a small racecar.

In the Pinewood Derby — the pack’s largest event of the year — the Scouts design and build small race cars with an adult. On race day, the Scouts race their cars against three other Scouts’ cars on a track.

The 2011 Pinewood Derby will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at Newcastle Elementary School.

“It’s a very special opportunity for a boy to plan, design and then race a car together with their dad or significant adult in their life,” said John Todderud, outdoor chairman for the pack. “Those of us who had this experience as kids keep our cars around, pretty much forever. These boys remember it, and the dads treasure the experience.”

Todderud said adults from the pack are willing to help Scouts design and build a car if they do not have an adult to help them.

Cub Scout Pack 738 meets at 7 p.m. the first Friday of each month at Newcastle Elementary School, and boys do not need to attend Newcastle Elementary to join. Call or e-mail Pack Committee Chairman Doug Chappelle at 206-719-3351 or for more information about how to join.

Did you know that the single most common “great” memory of cub scouts is the Pinewood Derby? I am on a mission to make this event more than a race, but a lesson in character, honesty, integrity, fair-play and sportsmanship! I have written a book “Pinewood-Winning by the Rules.” It is available at the Scout Shop (both local and on line) also Amazon and B&N.

I also have a Free Cubmaster’s PWD Build Lesson plan available on my website. Please feel free to download it and make this year’s lesson more than a race…but one of character!
