City Hall is closed today due to snow, but the City Council will still hold its special meeting at 6 p.m. tonight to make amendments to the 2011 budget and possibly adjust the property tax levy rate. The meeting will be in the Council Chambers, 13020 Newcastle Way.

City Manager Rob Wyman said city maintenance workers continuously roamed Newcastle’s streets overnight, using the city’s three trucks armed with snowplows. One trucks broke down during the night, and it is now being repaired.

Roads are being cleared in accordance with the city’s priority map, which you can see here. Wyman said priority one and many two routes are in fair condition, but priority three and four routes have not have mostly not been plowed and are still very slick.

Priority one routes are Newcastle Golf Club Road, Coal Creek Parkway and Newcastle Way from Coal Creek Parkway to 116th Avenue Southeast.

However, King County officials have urged residents to stay home today if they do not need to drive.

If a driver becomes stuck in snow or ice, he or she should not abandon the vehicle in a travel lane. The city is not impounding or ticketing cars given the icy conditions, but it may do so when the snow and ice begins to melt, Wyman said.

The open house scheduled for last night at Hazelwood Elementary School for residents to view proposed sidewalk designs for 116th Avenue Southeast was cancelled and will be rescheduled.

Issaquah and Renton schools are closed today, as are many King County facilities. See the full list of closed county facilities here. King County Metro buses are also running on snow routes, and 14 routes have been cancelled. See the full list of changed and cancelled routes here or call the Customer Information Center at 206-553-3000. Expect a wait on the phone line due to the volume of calls.

Metro has urged riders to be patient and dress warmly for waiting outdoors.

Waste Management, which handles garbage and recycling services in the city, has also halted service today. Find the latest updates of service delays from Waste Management here.
