Runners line up at the start of last year’s inaugural Newcastle 5K at Lake Boren Park. File

The nonprofit organization Newcastle Running Club will produce the second annual Newcastle 5K Run/Walk Aug. 28 in Lake Boren Park. The race will start promptly at 9 a.m., and festivities will immediately follow the race.

“It’s something to help out the city and make us feel more like a community,” Newcastle Running Club co-founder Lee Strom said.

Last year, he co-founded the club with his son, Clay Strom. Together, they organized the inaugural Newcastle 5K, which drew more than 400 participants and raised more than $6,500. They donated $5,000 to Hazen High School’s cross country and track teams, and saved the rest to fund this year’s event.

This year, Clay Strom is headed to college, and Lee Strom is organizing the event with the help of Hazen business instructors Ray McCabe and Mark Sabo. McCabe is also the school’s cross country coach, and Sabo is the school’s DECA advisor.

Lee Strom said they are hoping to have 500 participants this year.

“We’d love to even donate more,” he said.

The 3.1-mile route is the same as last year, starting and ending in Lake Boren Park. It follows the Waterline Trail south before heading west on Southeast 89th Place. It follows the road through the hairpin turn on 124th Avenue Southeast, and then joins up with the May Creek Trail. Finally, it joins back up with the Waterline Trail and returns to Lake Boren Park.

To run or walk the event, register at The Balanced Athlete at The Landing in Renton; Road Runner Sports in Kent or Seattle; or Footzone in Issaquah, Bellevue or Redmond. Also, register online at www.active.com, or by mail by filling out and sending a registration form to Lee Strom, 12423 S.E. 89th Place, Newcastle, WA 98056.

Find the registration form on the Newcastle 5K website, at City Hall or at any of the event sponsors’ places of business.

In-store registration ends Aug. 26, online registration ends at noon Aug. 27 and mailed registrations must be postmarked by Aug. 21. However, runners can also register from 7-8 a.m. the day of the event at Lake Boren Park.

In-store, online and mail registration costs $25 per person or $20 per person for groups of four or more. Registration the day of the event costs $30 per person or $25 per person for groups of four or more. Make checks payable to the Newcastle Running Club.

Participants will need to check in between 7 and 8:30 a.m. the day of the race. After the race, the course will close at 10:30 a.m.

Participants will be divided into different categories by age, and the top three male and female finishers in each category will receive medals. All participants will receive T-shirts.

Parking will be available adjacent to Lake Boren Park.
