The Newcastle Elementary School PTSA received the PTA’s Taking Significant Action Award for its fall 2009 Health and Family Fitness Night. The Washington State PTA gave the award to five PTSAs across the state.

Health and Family Fitness Night included a two-hour walkathon, and children were led through different types of exercises, including calisthenics, aerobics, martial arts and Zumba.

James Riley, a defender from the Seattle Sounders FC, was also on hand to speak about what it takes to be a professional athlete, and how he keeps fit and healthy. Furthermore, there were booths detailing nutrition, body health, dental health and businesses that promote physical activity, such as the YMCA.

Kiersten Byus, Kimberly Eickerman, Molly Hegenderfer and Elizabeth Ury, from the Newcastle Elementary PTSA, organized the event.
