NEW — 6 a.m. June 3, 2010

On Saturday morning, the city will celebrate the opening of the new Hazelwood Trail, which is 1,200 feet long and connects the West Cross Town Trail to the neighborhoods on 116th Avenue Southeast and Hazelwood Elementary School.

Festivities begin at 8:55 a.m. at the Lake Boren Park parking lot, where Parks Commissioner Peggy Price will lead a trail walk on the Cross Town Trail to the location of the ribbon cutting, near the school.

Those who wish to attend but skip the trail walk should park at the school upper parking lot and follow the balloons to the location of the ribbon cutting.

Ribbon-cutting festivities will begin at 10 a.m., and refreshments — including cupcakes, trail mix, coffee and bottled water — will be complimentary. The ribbon cutting, to be performed by Mayor John Dulcich, will be followed by a walk on the new Hazelwood Trail into the 7.3-acre Hazelwood Park.

Call Grace Still with the Newcastle Weed Warriors at 228-7927 if you want to volunteer at the ribbon cutting. Volunteers will meet at Hazelwood Elementary at 9 a.m. to set up before the celebration.

Eagle Scout candidates Nathan Malmberg, Aaron Escamilla, Evan Bell and Ildar Hayes, as well as a slew of volunteers constructed the trail last fall.

Orthodontic Excellence, next to Starbucks in the Coal Creek Shopping Center, is sponsoring the event.
