Golf course groomers’ noise is insensitive to nearby neighbors

Well, after years of enduring the 4:30-6 a.m. noise from the groundskeepers on The Golf Course at Newcastle, I have decided to raise a little noise of my own.

On May 27 at 5 a.m., a small army of golf course groundskeepers with two-cycle, unmuffled leaf blowers and Weed Eaters descended upon the 13th fairway, behind my house. From inside my bedroom, I slowly awoke from a groggy sleep to the sound of these angry mechanical bees outside my window.

In late June, you can be awakened at 4:30 a.m. to the sound of tractors and grooming machines happily disturbing the Meadow View Park neighborhood that resides along the golf course.

The maintenance supervisor gives the grounds crew their day’s work schedule, and instead of going to the north side of the golf course (where no one lives and there is a noisy road), they start on the fairway right next to the maintenance building, adjacent to the Meadow View Park neighborhood. How convenient for them.

We have complained before, but every year we have to go through this complaint process all over again. (Bad memories? New maintenance supervisor? Poor attitude? Who knows?) We have lived here since the early 1990s, long before the golf course was even a dream in the eye of Scott Oki, so we are not interested in arguments about who was here first.

If I were a teenager ripping up and down the streets on a crotch rocket, I’m sure the local constable would have me by the ear and be after my parents to quiet me down. However, golf courses seem to get off the hook when it comes to disturbing the peace.

I am hereby requesting the city of Newcastle to consider this a formal citizen complaint and request that the city direct the appropriate public safety personnel to notify the responsible personnel at the Newcastle golf course to cease and desist disturbing the early morning peace in the Meadow View Park neighborhood.
