Contributed The Hazen High School Drill Team poses after taking third place in the military, pom and kick categories at the state competition in Yakima in March.

The Hazen High School drill team competed at the state drill championships March 27 in Yakima and took third place in the military, pom and kick categories.

“I am very proud of my girls this year,” said Kristin Sargent, head coach of the Hazen drill team. “The state 3A military and pom categories are extremely competitive, and to place among the tops of those teams means a lot. These Hazen drillers work so hard for 10 months, they definitely deserved to be recognized for their efforts.”

Sargent was also recognized as coach of the year at the event.

“I know it sounds cliché, but I was completely shocked,” Sargent said. “Being recognized by my team and by my coaching colleagues is very humbling.”

Prior to competing at the state competition, the team competed in the District 3 regional competition at South Kitsap High School March 13. At that competition, the team took first in kick, second in pom and third in the military categories.
