Learn about sustainability at the Earth Day celebration April 24 in Lake Boren Park.The event is from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and the festivities will include 15 mini-seminars on green living that will cover topics such as the best green remodeling products and permeable paving.

The April 24 Earth Day celebration will include 15 seminars, including one led by the Newcastle Weed Warriors on noxious weeds. Also, more than two-dozen vendors — including Newcastle Weed Warriors, Puget Sound Energy and Friends of the Cedar River Watershed — will be on hand to provide tips for sustainable living.

Newcastle Chamber of Commerce board member John Jensen and Carmela Ramaglia, actress and owner of local Pilates studio Power Within Pilates, will emcee the event.Other highlights will include a performance by the Boeing Concert Band and a walk on a local trail led by Jim Price, of Newcastle Trails, in the afternoon.

There will also be barbecue at noon on the site of the coming development Trails at Newcastle, east off of Coal Creek Parkway between Southeast 79th Street and 135th Avenue Southeast.

Furthermore, the nonprofit organization 1 Green Planet will hold a recycling drive on the access road just west of Lake Boren Park, and you can donate TVs, electronics, appliances and metal items.

The Newcastle Elementary School PTSA is sponsoring the drive, and although there is no cost to recycle, the PTSA gladly accepts donations and recommends a minimum donation of $5 for a small number of items and $15 for a large number of items.

Grace Stiller, a member of Newcastle Trails and founder of Newcastle Weed Warriors, and Brenda Nunes, a community developer for Trails at Newcastle, are organizing the day’s festivities.
