Three of the seven members of the city’s Planning Commission resigned in February.Former City Council candidate and Planning Commission Vice Chair Kandy Schendel resigned Feb. 11, effective immediately; Beth Glynn resigned Feb. 16, effectively immediately; and Kim Ellis resigned Feb. 17, although she will remain with the commission until May or until the City Council appoints her replacement.

“As a citizen, it has been disheartening to watch the new direction being taken by the current City Council,” Schendel wrote. “Yet, I respect the election process and understand these are the people Newcastle voted into office.

“The Planning Commission is obligated to work on the projects mandated by the City Council, and in watching the actions the council has taken in their first two months, it became an easy decision for me to move on to other endeavors,” she wrote.

She added that she will miss her fellow members of the Planning Commission and the work they did together.

Neither Glynn nor Ellis could be reached for comment, but Planning Commission Chairman Rob Lemmon said all three brought valuable skills and a deep understanding of development process to the Planning Commission.

“Their experience and knowledge will be missed,” he said.
