Select soccer team Newport FC Diamonds Gu12’s finished its season as one of the eight best select soccer teams in the Washington Youth Soccer’s Commissioner’s State Cup.

It defeated four teams before falling 1-0 to Shoreline FC Blue Flames in the quarterfinals.Newcastle residents Amit Furman, Samantha Petersen, Kristen LeBar and Jasmine Curl play on the team. Furman and Petersen are midfielders, LeBar is a defender and Curl is goalkeeper.

The team finished its season as the top Gu12 team — which denotes girls 12 or younger — from the Eastside Youth Soccer Association, and it was the top team from Washington Youth Soccer District 2.

The team formed last May, and it had only 10 players, not enough for a full team, head coach Brian Curl said. He said the Diamonds resorted to recruiting players from other areas who did not make their local select teams.

The team began with two tournaments prior to the beginning of its regular season, and it played its regular season games from September to December in the North Puget Sound League, which encompasses Washington Youth Soccer districts 1 and 2.

In January, the team entered the state cup. To prepare for the challenge, the girls had to practice in the sub-zero temperatures that blanketed the region at the end of last year.

“I was blown away at how tough these girls are,” Brian Curl said, regarding the practices in December.

Although the team’s final loss in the quarterfinals came from a penalty kick, he said the team had a tremendous season.

“These girls played their hearts out,” he said. “They played in probably the toughest league in the entire state for their age group.”

Jasmine Curl and Furman said the season was both fun and challenging.

“The teams we were playing were hard, but we kept up with them as best as we could,” Jasmine Curl said.

Furman said she is now playing on an indoor team to prepare for next season, when she will try out for the 13-year-old team.

“I had a great time and my coaches are great,” she said. “It was a great experience.”
