The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has distributed a $500,000 grant to the Renton School District for energy improvements. At Hazen High School, the funds will be used to purchase a new boiler, upgrade its water systems, purchase digital thermostats and improve lighting systems in the gym, according to Randy Matheson, executive director of community relations for the Renton School District.
At McKnight Middle School, the funds will be used to purchase air chillers to keep the school cool during warm months, controls for the chillers and lighting system upgrades in the gym.
The rest of the funds will be for projects at many of the 22 other schools in the district.
“What’s important here is we’re able to get this money in a grant format to get these improvements in schools,” Matheson said. “We won’t have to dip into our operating funds.”
Matheson said operating funds are predominately used for books and teachers’ salaries.
Through the program, the OSPI dispersed $16.9 million across 59 school districts. To receive the grant, school districts were required to identify projects where energy savings could be guaranteed, according to the OSPI. The maximum amount a school district could receive was $500,000.
