Liberty Patriots’ basketball programs struggled at times through January

The Liberty boys and girls basketball teams found spotty success in January.

The girls team went 3-4 during the month, defeating Decatur 55-26, Interlake 71-62 and Sammamish 50-25. The team lost to Juanita 50-33, Mercer Island 56-52, Mount Si 57-46 and Bellevue 41-33.

The team is now 7-10 overall for the year and 4-5 in league play.

Now heading into the final few games of the season, the girls team is led by Aspen Winegar and Danni Sjolander, who have averaged 11.8 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

Madison Birdsall has also played well, making a team-leading 14 3-pointers and 43 assists for the season.

Halie Ericksen and Sjolander also did well defensively; they have each racked up 123 rebounds on the season. Ericksen also leads the team with 28 steals.

Next, the girls team hosts Juanita at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5.

The boys team went 4-4 during the month, defeating Washington 55-52, Aberdeen 57-56, Interlake 62-59 and Sammamish 58-57. It lost to Juanita 48-33, Mercer Island 49-48, Mount Si 67-48 and Bellevue 78-40.

The team is now 5-12 overall for the season and 2-7 in league play.

The boys team was led by Chandler Jenkins, Kylan Marlow and Farzam Shokri.

Jenkins has scored 189 points in the season, an average of 13.5 points per game. Marlow has scored 146 points for the year, an average of 9.1 points per game. Shokri has scored 113 points in the season, an average of 7.1 points per game.

Next, the boys team takes on Mercer Island on the road at 7:30 p.m. Feb 9.
