In August, a group of community volunteers created the Friends of Renton Schools fund, which operates under the Renton Community Foundation.

On Nov. 30, fund co-founder Charlie Connor hosted a kickoff celebration at his home, and civic members, PTA members, community members and officials from the Renton School District attended.“What’s really neat is there’s definitely a lot of enthusiasm about it,” said fund co-founder Sherre Piantanida. “Right now, we’re in the phase of trying to pull together a spring fundraiser and a fall fundraiser.”

The Friends of Renton Schools will be used to “bridge the gap between state education funding and what it really takes to provide Renton School District students with the best possible opportunity for a world-class education,” volunteers said in a press release.

Piantanida said the fund is not a charity, but is rather a fund used to directly invest in students’ education. She said the foundation will specifically aim to improve districtwide curriculum, classroom grants and support programs, as well as teacher and staff training.

The spring fundraiser will likely be directed toward corporate donors, and the fall fundraiser will likely be directed toward community donors, she said.

Piantanida also said the fund is still actively searching for core board members.
