Liberty basketball: girls have success while boys struggle

The Liberty High School girls basketball team found mixed success in December, going 4-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. However, the boys basketball team struggled, going 1-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The girls defeated Mount Si 60-45, Sammamish 72-31 and Spanaway Lake 50-42. They lost to Skyline 60-30, Newport 46-39, Bellevue 55-48 and Miramonte (California) 51-36.The girls team also played Wilsonville (Oregon) Dec. 30, but the game was after Newcastle News’ deadline.
Aspen Winegar led the girls team in scoring, racking up 79 points and averaging 11.3 points per game. Close behind Winegar was Danni Sjolander, with 76 points and an average of 10.9 points per game.
Madison Birdsall led the team in assists, racking up 21 and averaging 3 assists per game.
Sjolander and Halie Ericksen have been rebounding machines for the girls, each recording 58 so far this season, and averaging 8.3 rebounds per game.
Next, the girls team plays Decatur on the road at 7 p.m. Jan. 7.
The boys team lost games to Mount Rainier 58-45, Skyline 73-40, Mount Si 66-48, Sammamish 81-40, Bellevue 63-41, Chief Sealth 72-52 and Kent-Meridian 72-57. The team’s only victory was against Cedarcrest, 76-58.
The team also played Jackson, but the game was after the News’ deadline.
Guards Farzam Shokri and Chandler Jankins and forward Kylan Marlow have led the team so far.
Shokri has led the team in scoring, racking up 72 points and averaging 10.3 points per game. Jenkins scored 65 points and averaged 13 points per game. Marlow scored 66 points and averaged 9.4 points per game.
The boys team’s next game is at home against Juanita at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 1.
