Hazen High School in Renton hosted its first invitational dance competition Dec. 12, and dancers from 19 other high schools from across Western Washington attended, including dancers from Liberty High School.“Hosting our first Dance & Drill competition was an incredible experience,” said Kristin Sargent, head coach of the Hazen drill team, who organized the competition.

“After months of planning, and organizing, it was so rewarding to see the competition be a success,” she said. “Great competitions only happen because great teams come to compete. We had the best of the best.”

The Hazen drill team opened with an exhibition dance, and the Liberty drill team performed ninth.

Liberty drill team head coach Laura Gawler said her team gave a strong performance.

“We did really well,” Gawler said. “I’m really proud of the girls. The routine we did was a lot more intense than what we did in the past.”

The competition concluded with a drill down — an individual competition where members from all the competing schools follow commands read off by a caller — and the presentation of awards to winning teams.

“To host 20 amazing teams was a daunting task, and the event would not have been the same without their participation,” Sargent said. “All of the hard work was worth it in the end, and I look forward to hosting again next year.”
