Crime in Newcastle declined during first part of year

Though residential burglaries increased slightly, crime in Newcastle dropped during the first quarter of the year. Serious crimes were down more than 15 percent from the same period in 2008, and minor crimes declined more than 8 percent.

Residential burglaries climbed to 17 cases — up from 11 during the same period in 2008. But larceny cases dropped 50 percent and commercial burglary cases sunk 83 percent. Police reported no arson cases in 2009.

Newcastle Police reported the declines Wednesday morning.
