Newcastle’s Nate Elledge was selected last month as police chief of Sammamish.

The city narrowed the field of candidates to Elledge and Shawn Ledford, police chief of Newcastle from 2001-2006.

Both men are captains with the King County Sheriff’s Office. Sammamish contracts with the sheriff’s office for police services.

“This is something that I’ve been interested in for awhile,” Elledge said, adding that he had applied for the job once before. “The chief has an opportunity to get out more and interact with the public. I’m looking forward to that.”

Elledge was the section commander for the Regional Communications and Emergency Coordination Center in Renton.

“We have our hands on every type of call that comes in,” said Elledge, an 11-year resident of Newcastle.

Elledge and Ledford underwent a series of interviews in early May. The interviewing panels included city officials from Sammamish; the police chiefs of Issaquah, Bellevue and Carnation; and three sergeants from the sheriff’s office.

Sammamish City Manager Ben Yazici selected Elledge from the finalists.

“I think he’s going to be an excellent police chief for our community,” Yazici said.
