Newcastle Baseball opened the tournament season as 9U champions of the 2009 Eastside Huskies Baseball Club Memorial Day Tournament.

Newcastle’s Miners purple team went undefeated against Bainbridge, Centralia, West Seattle and Newcastle’s blue team.

The Newcastle Miners purple team defeated the Seattle Pony Select Senators 12-5 in the championship game. The first-place trophy is on display at Tapatio Mexican Grill restaurant.

Newcastle’s blue team earned a spot in the third-place game where they lost to Centralia.

Newcastle Baseball’s tournament success started last year, when teams placed second at the Maltby Classic and won the Mount Si Baseball Classic.

“We seem to have something special with this group of 8- to 9-year-old boys,” said coach Dave Macintosh. “Newcastle brought two teams to the tournament. It’s pretty incredible that we were able to represent our community in both the championship and third-place games.”

Newcastle plans to play in four additional tournaments through summer, including the Maltby Classic and the BPA U9 Championships.

The Miners purple team members include Aaron Barber, Adam Morrison, Andrew Dietz, Ben Patacsil, Brandon Steinberg, Chase McIntosh, Cyris Nimmo, Grant Schiller, Justin Tucker, Rory Brown, Tory Anderson, Trevor Curl and Zachary Sanidad. The team is coached by Raul Sanidad, Dave McIntosh and Troy Anderson.
