The City Council has awarded the construction contract for the bus stop project to Marshbank Construction Co., of Lake Stevens.

Marshbank was the low bidder on the project at just over $2.1 million. The bid is about $600,000 lower than the engineer’s estimate. Marshbank is also working on the Coal Creek Parkway project.

The bus project includes four bus shelters with design elements regarding the region’s coal mining history. The project will also bring improvements to the city’s main intersection of Coal Creek Parkway and Newcastle Way, including bike lanes, realigned crosswalks and new sidewalks.

City officials partnered with Sound Transit on the $4.6 million project, with 87 percent of the money coming from Sound Transit. Groundbreaking is expected in early May; the project will take about eight months to complete.
