Former Seattle Seahawk Mack Strong and his wife Zoe will receive the Mark Matthews Service to Children Award at Childhaven’s centennial celebration luncheon April 23.

The Mark Matthews Service to Children Award is presented in honor of the Rev. Mark Matthews, who founded the Seattle Day Nursery in 1909. The name changed to Childhaven in 1985.

The award is given to those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to enhancing the lives of children in the community. Past winners include former King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng, Seattle Times executive William Blethen and former state Sen. Pat Thibaudeau.

The Strongs, who live in Newcastle, participated in last fall’s Tackle Child Abuse, a fundraising event involving the Seahawks and benefiting Childhaven.

This year’s luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. April 23 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, 800 Convention Place, in downtown Seattle.

The keynote speaker is former Northwest native Meg Tilly, an Oscar-nominated actress, novelist and child abuse survivor. Tilly grew up in Victoria, British Columbia.

A minimum donation of $150 is requested. Proceeds benefit Childhaven’s advocacy for victims of child abuse and neglect.
