Teal will fill the remaining year left on Maxwell’s four-year term. She will have to run for election in November.

Teal was among three candidates who interviewed Jan. 20 with the board. The other two finalists were: Kirby Bowser, controller and chief financial officer for Junior Achievement of Washington, and James Grossnickle, a research scientist at the University of Washington.

Maxwell, a real estate agent, resigned from the board after she won election to the state Legislature in November.

Teal represents the school board’s 5th District, which includes Newcastle, Newport Hills and north Renton.
