Volksmarch Newcastle Parks/Trails Walk.
The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Sept 27. Participants can walk a 5- or 10-kilometer course. The event is open to walkers of all skill levels. It starts and ends at HomeStreet Bank on Coal Creek Parkway Southeast.

Organizers are hoping for about 300 participants.

Volksmarch participants are required to carry a start-and-finish card. Walkers must complete the course by 4 p.m. The American Volkssport Association sanctions the event. This will be the fifth year HomeStreet has sponsored the event, said Linda Stemler, branch manager.

“It is a dedicated two hours you can spend with your family, talking and exercising,” she said.

Last year’s Volksmarch attracted 300 entrants. The first year, about 70 walkers participated, Stemler said.

Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome on the 5-kilometer walk; dogs on leashes are also welcome.

Since fall weather in the Northwest is always a crapshoot, Stemler said walkers should dress accordingly.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing,” she said.
